Christmas 2010

TAS believe strongly in giving back to the community and hence
as a whole centre, we are involved in community work. We do our
community work through the church that the founder of the
centre is from-Heart of God church. We organize and run the
educational activities for the Heart of God church's children's church.

These programmes are what we do as part of our volunteer work and we do them
for free to help the community. This is strictly part of our
community service and not part of our normal programmes.

Our normal regular lessons have nothing to do with the church.
These community service programmes are what we do above our
normal programmes, so far, we have opened these
programmes to the members of the church, TAS students
and their friends.

However, as they are meant to benefit the community in general,
we actually do open them up to anyone who is interested.

Through these programmes, we want the children to realze that
learning can be enjoyable and we want to inculcate in them a love for knowledge.

2010 Christmas Event :
A trip to the North Pole

For this event, we will be educating the children on various Science concepts and have some hands-on experiments for the children to learn and have fun.

Children are required to design and create their own toy car incoporating this concept.

2. Instant Snow
This involves the concept of certain chemical bonds between polymers.
Children will witness the magic of creating instant snow and even get a chance to make some for themselves!

TAS team
Hi Everyone,

Through these programmes, we want the children to realize that
learning can be enjoyable and we want to inculcate in them a love
for the English Langauge.

These are some of the programmes we have/had for 2010:

1) Creative Writing Camp
- We had a creative writing camp from Nov 24- Nov 26. We
taught the children some creative writing techniques during the
camp organised by the children's church. The focus during the camp
was more on team building games, the creative writing activities
were an add-on to the the team building activities.

2) Spelling Bee Competition
- This is an on-going programme we have until Dec 18.
In this programme, we teach the children how to love and
learn the spelling of difficult/easily missspelt words like -
'gynaecologist', 'symptom' etc. We do this by using
rhythms and raps to make the learning easy.

Spelling is an area that some children are weak in and this
affects their composition, however we cannot use much of the
tuition lesson time to go through spelling, hence we want to use
this programme to inspire the children to learn their spelling well.
The children will have a spelling bee booklet to take home and
they can revise the words at home as well.

The winner of the programme will get $100 worth of prizes. We often
reward the winners of these programmes as we want to motivate
the children to do well and take the programmes seriously as well.

2011 programmes:

1) Word Wizard
This programme will focus on building the vocabulary of the
children. We will teach the children the synonyms of words
commonly used in compositions like 'darkness', 'fear' etc.

We believe that vocabulary is an area that many children
need help in building up and there is an endless amount
of words they need to know to do well in both paper 1 and 2
and hence we provide this programme to boost up the
vocabulary of the students. The children will also get
a vocabulary booklet to bring home to revise.

2) Write a book programme

Those who do well under the Word Wizard programme will have a
chance to join this programme. In this programme, we specially
mentor and teach budding writers. We will get them to write a stories
and if their story is good enough, we might publish their
story as a short novel. The stories here are not the ones
that are used to write for school compositions as they
are meant to be more creative and out-of-the-box.

In this way, we want to inspire and show children that they too can
write well enough to publish a short story of their own and be a young
author.

Details of these programmes:

These programmes are all held in the first part of the children's
church programme, after this programme, the children have
games and character building lessons (bible stories are used to teach
them values). We are only responsible for the educational
programmes.

Timing: 2-4 pm (every saturday)-for P3-P6/5-7 pm
(every saturday)-for K2-P3

For more information on the programmes, you can call us at
67588744 or drop us an email.

a composition that shows you and your child how to
apply the creative writing phrases from some of the
books to a piece of writing.

If you buy at least $100 worth of books, you will also get a
free vocabulary 'Word Wizard part 1' booklet in which we
have compiled some commonly confused vocabulary words
in a booklet and provided for each word: the meaning of
the word, the mnemonics of the word (how to remember
the meaning of the word) and also the usage of the word
(how to use the word in a sentence).

TAS
NOTICE :

Hi parents,

TAS will be moving out of Yishun as our lease for the current Yishun centre is ending in a few months' time.
There is a high possibility that we might be moving to Ang Mo Kio as we are unable to find a suitable place in Yishun.
Tentatively, we will move earliest at the end of January (2011) or latest the beginning
of March (2011).

However, this is not finalised as there are some details to be tied down.

Thank you,
TAS
Name of programme: Survivor 2010
(Similar to Survivor 2009, except a few of the
challenges are a little different)

What it is about: We have 2 parts to this programme.

Part A of programme- We will teach the children
about plant and animal adaptation and use mnemonics to
help them to remember the facts.

This part will take place at our centre

Part B of our programme- We will bring the
children to the Botanic Gardens for a field trip. We will
show them how plants adapt to their surroundings and
they will also get to see carnivorous plants up close.
We will then have a Survivor Challenge in which
the children are divided into teams and are given
a scenario: they are stranded on a deserted island.
They now have to make use of what they learn in
Science to come up with ways to survive in the
wild. They would make use of the materials given
to come up with solutions to the problem.
The winners of this challenge will have a
free Science Experiment book to take home.

Wet weather plan:
If it rains, instead of going
to the Botanic Gardens, we will conduct a
"Who Killed Spongebob" challenge
at the centre in which the children would have to
use what they learn in Science to solve his murder
and piece the forensic clues together. They will be
divided into teams and given forensic tools to help them
solve this 'murder'

PSLE marking days:
Programme: Crash course revision

What does it cover: We will go through a few of the more
common themes of composition writing.

We will also go through synthesis, grammar, comprehension,
editing, grammar and vocabulary. We will provide notes for
the vocabulary words taught. These notes have the mnemonics
for each word, hence it will be easy for the children to remember
the words. Synthesis notes will also be provided and the children
will be taught how to tackle inference questions. We will also teach
the children how to do comprehension close passages and provide
notes for it as well.

Basically, this is a crash course to make sure the children have
some thorough revision before the SA2.

When: 19 - 21 October (Tuesday to Thursday)

Time: 10 am - 2 pm: with a 15 min break (total 12 hours)

** For our crash course, we are offering it at a discount as we
want to help the children get ready for the SA2 and not to waste the
PSLE marking days at home- some would just take the time to slow
down and relax which is the last thing to do so near the SA2.

Cost: $144

Venue: Yishun centre (Block 414, Yishun Ave 11, #01-1859)

How to register: You can call us at 67588744 or
email us at thealternativestory@gmail.com and state the
name of the programme you are registering for. In this case,
it would be 'Crash Course Revision'

This course is for only 2 levels:

It will be Pri 1/2, 3/4 or 5/6.

We will start a class once there are at least 4 children
registered for it.

We will tell you the payment details once you register.

Nov/Dec holiday programme:
We will be having an intensive creative writing programme during
the year-end holidays.

Programme: Love to write!

What does it cover: We will cover all the creative writing
techniques- metaphorical language, building tension, interesting
story beginnings, varied sentence structure, story hooks etc.

We will teach the children how to apply these techniques to a range
of themes. We will also teach them how to start the compositions in
creative ways. On the last day of the programme, we will show the
children how to write a composition based on an imaginary setting.
This is to get them to be creative and to show them how to add a
twist to their writing. This course will help the children to get ready
for the examinations but it will also expose them to creative writing in
its original form-using their imagination to add 'spice' to their stories.
