Christmas 2010

TAS believe strongly in giving back to the community and hence
as a whole centre, we are involved in community work. We do our
community work through the church that the founder of the
centre is from-Heart of God church. We organize and run the
educational activities for the Heart of God church's children's church.

These programmes are what we do as part of our volunteer work and we do them
for free to help the community. This is strictly part of our
community service and not part of our normal programmes.

Our normal regular lessons have nothing to do with the church.
These community service programmes are what we do above our
normal programmes, so far, we have opened these
programmes to the members of the church, TAS students
and their friends.

However, as they are meant to benefit the community in general,
we actually do open them up to anyone who is interested.

Through these programmes, we want the children to realze that
learning can be enjoyable and we want to inculcate in them a love for knowledge.

TAS team
Hi Everyone,

Through these programmes, we want the children to realize that
learning can be enjoyable and we want to inculcate in them a love
for the English Langauge.

These are some of the programmes we have/had for 2010:

1) Creative Writing Camp
- We had a creative writing camp from Nov 24- Nov 26. We
taught the children some creative writing techniques during the
camp organised by the children's church. The focus during the camp
was more on team building games, the creative writing activities
were an add-on to the the team building activities.

2) Spelling Bee Competition
- This is an on-going programme we have until Dec 18.
In this programme, we teach the children how to love and
learn the spelling of difficult/easily missspelt words like -
'gynaecologist', 'symptom' etc. We do this by using
rhythms and raps to make the learning easy.

Spelling is an area that some children are weak in and this
affects their composition, however we cannot use much of the
tuition lesson time to go through spelling, hence we want to use
this programme to inspire the children to learn their spelling well.
The children will have a spelling bee booklet to take home and
they can revise the words at home as well.

The winner of the programme will get $100 worth of prizes. We often
reward the winners of these programmes as we want to motivate
the children to do well and take the programmes seriously as well.

2011 programmes:

1) Word Wizard
This programme will focus on building the vocabulary of the
children. We will teach the children the synonyms of words
commonly used in compositions like 'darkness', 'fear' etc.

We believe that vocabulary is an area that many children
need help in building up and there is an endless amount
of words they need to know to do well in both paper 1 and 2
and hence we provide this programme to boost up the
vocabulary of the students. The children will also get
a vocabulary booklet to bring home to revise.

2) Write a book programme

Those who do well under the Word Wizard programme will have a
chance to join this programme. In this programme, we specially
mentor and teach budding writers. We will get them to write a stories
and if their story is good enough, we might publish their
story as a short novel. The stories here are not the ones
that are used to write for school compositions as they
are meant to be more creative and out-of-the-box.

In this way, we want to inspire and show children that they too can
write well enough to publish a short story of their own and be a young
author.

Details of these programmes:

These programmes are all held in the first part of the children's
church programme, after this programme, the children have
games and character building lessons (bible stories are used to teach
them values). We are only responsible for the educational
programmes.
